Surrounded by the sea, Nagasaki has a beautiful landscape composed of many islands. The total number of islands such as Goto Islands, Iki, and Tsushima is 594! Proud of being the best in Japan. The islands have long been developed through trade with the Korean Peninsula and mainland China. During the Nanban or period of national isolation trade with the West played a major role in Japan's modernization.
Nagasaki has two World Heritage Sites, one of which is related to Christianity. One is the cultural heritage including the oldest Christian building in Japan, Oura Tenshudo (get off at Oura Cathedral), and the other is the Industrial Revolution Heritage of the Meiji Era, including Hashima Island (Battleship Island). There are many places that have retained a strong sense of foreign culture through trade, including the exotic Glover Garden on Minami Yamate Hill (get off at Oura Cathedral), Shinchi Chinatown (get off at Shinchi Chinatown), one of the three major Chinatowns in Japan, and Dejima Island (get off at Dejima), where you can take a time trip back to Japan at the end of the Edo period! Nagasaki is a place that suffered a great deal from the war. The Peace Park (get off at Peace Park) and the Atomic Bomb Museum (get off at Atomic Bomb Museum) are facilities that were built to firmly carry on the negative history of the city.
Nagasaki is also a treasure trove of Japanese, Western, and Chinese food culture. Traditional dishes such as Shippoku cuisine which is a mix of foreign essences and whale dishes which emphasize the bounty of the sea to Goto Udon noodles which are thin and firm also Kakuni steamed bun which can be enjoyed in Shinchi Chinatown there is so much variety that it is hard to conquer it all. Do not forget the gourmet food of the citizens, Nagasaki Champon and Sara Udon.
Nagasaki is a small city with the charm of the world concentrated in it. There are many fulfilling encounters scattered throughout the city that cannot be fully explored in one day. There are many hills and narrow alleys and it is difficult to get around. The streetcar is a very convenient way to get to the sights. The view from the streetcar window adds to the exotic atmosphere.
