Welcome to Kumamoto City!

CITY

Water, greenery and nature abound in Kumamoto City.

Located roughly in the center of Kyushu, Kumamoto City is the third most populous city after Fukuoka and Kitakyushu, and developed around Kumamoto Castle, a world-famous castle. Blessed with abundant natural resources and overflowing with greenery, the Suizenji Jojuen Garden is a perfect example of a relaxing spot for sightseeing in the city. Kumamoto City is also known as the water city due to the wealth of clean groundwater that supplies all of the city’s water. This mineral-rich water gives all of the food grown in the city a delicious and luxurious taste. We hope that you enjoy the history and nature of the city as you try Kumamoto’s gourmet cuisine.

Kumamoto City has one of the three most famous castles in Japan, Kumamoto Castle (get off at the Kumamoto Castle & City Hall tram stop). Although it was damaged by the Kumamoto Earthquake in 2016, the restoration effort is underway and open for special viewing now. You can only see the reconstruction of this historic site now, so please check it out! Other nearby attractions include the Kumamoto Castle Museum Wakuwakuza, where you can experience the history of Kumamoto virtually, and the “Sakura Pathway,” where you can buy local food and souvenirs. Visitors have been known to get addicted to the spiciness of Kumamoto’s specialty, Karashi Renkon (lotus root with Japanese mustard), and its flavor and spiciness are at their peak when it’s freshly fried! The Momoyama-style Suizenji Jojuen Garden (get off at the Suizenji Park tram stop), which has been designated as a national scenic spot and historic site, is one of the best photo spots in the city. We hope you will enjoy Kumamoto City, a city full of exciting and unique encounters, and feel free to invite a friend!
